Message from Cranbrook School Council

Message from Cranbrook School Council

Further to Mr Nicholas Sampson’s resignation as Headmaster on 8 March 2024, the School Council and Mr Sampson have finalised arrangements for the conclusion of Mr Sampson’s employment by the School, which have now taken effect. The terms of these arrangements are confidential.

During Mr Sampson’s 12-year tenure as Headmaster, Cranbrook achieved many important milestones, including:

  • Consistent improvement in the School’s academic results.
  • Completion of the Junior School campus transformation, which resulted in the distinctive Junior School campus in Rose Bay serving Years K to 6.
  • Introduction of the successful International Baccalaureate (IB) program to the Senior School, with Cranbrook now being an IB Continuum School.
  • The decision to introduce co-education in the Senior School from 2026 onwards.
  • Expansion of Cranbrook’s co-curricular programs, particularly in the creative arts.
  • The transformation of the Senior School campus through its new Chapel, Vicars Centenary Building, Aquatics and Fitness Centre, refurbished Perkins Building, among other important facility improvements.
  • Establishment of the Wolgan Valley facilities.

The Council thanks Mr Sampson for his contribution and long service and, in good faith, wishes him the very best for the future.

The Council made a public statement on 8 March 2024 to the effect that Mr Sampson had failed to report to the School Council allegations of historic misconduct involving a Cranbrook Senior School teacher while employed at another school. We confirm that was a reference to the School Council as constituted on that date and that the Council did not intend to suggest otherwise. The Council wishes to clarify that Mr Sampson did report the matter to a differently constituted Council in 2015 and acknowledges that its statement may have caused confusion.

The School Council has initiated a search for a permanent Head of School and details about this process will be made available shortly. In the meantime, Michele Marquet continues to serve as Acting Head of School.
