Since 1918, Cranbrook has grown through the generosity of families who believed in giving back. When our founders purchased the old Cranbrook estate on the shores of Sydney Harbour and opened their doors to the first 64 boys in the optimism of a world just emerging from war, they set in motion a tradition that has never depended on fees or funding alone. Esse Quam Videri – to be, rather than to seem to be – has guided Cranbrook ever since: a place where every student is encouraged to discover their potential, strive to be their best, and thrive in the pursuit of excellence. Every inspiring space, every means-tested scholarship, every programme that enriches learning exists because someone before us chose to invest in a Cranbrook education. Now, it’s our turn to continue that legacy.
Bringing that vision to life takes more than fees or government funding. Fees sustain what happens in the classroom each day, but they were never meant to fund our building programme, specialist facilities, or the scholarships that open a Cranbrook education to those who couldn’t otherwise access it. This is why philanthropy matters: it lets Cranbrook move with ambition rather than caution – funding the facilities our students deserve and speeding up the projects on our campus plan. Every gift helps close the space between what our students need now and what fees and government funding were never built to provide.
From those first 64 students to the thriving community we are today, Cranbrook has always been shaped by the people who believed in it. Now, as we enter an exciting new era as a coeducational school, that legacy takes on fresh meaning – a chance to extend everything we value about a Cranbrook education to more young people than ever before.
