Cranbrook School Achieves Global Recognition in Digital Innovation and AI Governance

Cranbrook’s long-standing commitment to educational excellence, underpinned by technological innovation that enhances teaching and learning, has been recognised through two significant global accreditations. The School has been named a Microsoft Lighthouse School for 2026 and is the first school globally to achieve ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification, the international standard for AI Management Systems.

In recognition of its innovative use of Microsoft technology across the Junior and Senior School, Cranbrook has been awarded Lighthouse status, Microsoft’s highest level of accreditation for schools demonstrating excellence in digital teaching and learning. Lighthouse status is awarded to institutions that Microsoft identifies as global best-practice examples of how technology can enhance student outcomes and transform the classroom experience.

As a Microsoft Lighthouse School, Cranbrook joins an exclusive cohort of leading Australian schools all recognised for their commitment to educational transformation.

The School has transitioned to the Microsoft 365 ecosystem and progressively integrated Microsoft Surface devices across its campuses, with staff commencing use of the devices this year. The multi-purpose devices and integrated software ecosystem enhance communication, collaboration and connectivity, providing students and teachers with a more innovative and enriching teaching and learning experience.

The interactive devices support a range of learning approaches, enabling students to write, create, collaborate in real time and work independently. Students can seamlessly move between notetaking, digital annotation, creative expression and collaborative projects, while accessing tools that foster greater independence and ownership of learning.

This accreditation brings a range of benefits to the Cranbrook community, including international recognition as a best-practice school. Cranbrook will also benefit from membership in the Microsoft Education Insider Programme, a global community of educators and IT leaders that provides opportunities for early product previews, collaboration and the exchange of best practice. All Lighthouse Schools also receive early access to Microsoft’s technology roadmap and future Surface developments, as well as a range of dedicated support and engagement benefits from Microsoft.

This recognition builds on Cranbrook’s broader commitment to excellence in digital innovation and information security. Cranbrook is the first school globally to achieve ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification, the internationally recognised standard for AI Management Systems, alongside certification to ISO/IEC 27001, the internationally recognised standard for Information Security Management Systems.

The certification, awarded following independent evaluation by the auditors of Citation Certification Pty Ltd, covers Cranbrook’s provision of information security activities, including the handling, storage and processing of sensitive information. It reflects the School’s ongoing commitment to protecting student and staff data, as well as sensitive operational information, through the highest global standards of cybersecurity, providing the Cranbrook community with confidence that their information is managed securely and responsibly.

Cranbrook’s recognition as a Microsoft Surface Lighthouse School and its ISO 27001:2022 and ISO42001:2023 certification reflects Cranbrook’s enduring commitment to the values of excellence and global mindedness, fostering an environment where students are supported to develop the knowledge, skills and perspectives to thrive and make a meaningful impact both within and beyond the school gates.
