St Mark's Pre-School

St Mark's Pre-School

At St Mark's Pre-School we provide an environment that is secure, warm and exciting. We use the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum framework to guide our approach to teaching and learning where children are able to develop life-long skills that they can take and use both inside and outside the classroom, and to support children’s efforts to construct meaning from the world around them.

Through inquiry, we engage children in learning from the very beginning of their education to develop:

  • a positive self-concept and an increasing understanding and knowledge of the world
  • emotional security and the freedom to have fun through exploration and social interactions
  • social awareness and friendship skills that instil trust, the ability to share, to cooperate and to develop positive relationships
  • language and communication skills through guided and free inquiry
  • intellectual skills, reasoning skills, problem-solving skills and the understanding of basic concepts through guided inquiry
  • physical health through body awareness, sensory perception, and fine and gross motor skills
  • creativity through self-expression, language, music and inquiry.

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy at St Mark’s Pre-School is underpinned by important beliefs about children, families and learning in the very early years.

We believe that each child is unique and this uniqueness should be honoured and celebrated.

We do this by providing an engaging and stimulating programme based on the child’s interests, input and ideas.

Our staff are passionate about children’s learning and inspiring them to strive for excellence.

Learning is viewed as a continuous journey, where staff identify children’s needs and use various methods of ongoing assessment to plan and promote the next stage of their learning.

We see children as independent learners who take responsibility for themselves, others and their environment, as they continue to develop their sense of agency.

We believe that children need to learn to respect the ideas and opinions of others.

We ensure that nurturing trusting relationships are built to honour each child’s individuality.

We see children as part of a larger community. We foster global mindedness and we value cultural diversity in our community.
