NSW Schools Sailing Champs Term 2 2022
05 May 22 by Tom Brewer, Head of Sailing
Cranbrook fielded three teams into the NSW Secondary Schools Sailing Championship last weekend on the Harbour. Coming off the back of podium positions last year, the boys were fired up and ready to show off their skills and fight hard to wrestle the trophy off of Scots College for the first time in 7 years. The format saw 20 teams fighting in a single division over two and a half days for the qualifying period, with a relegation format that repeatedly pits the best teams against each other. From that point, the top 8 head into a fast-paced elimination final series which concludes the event.
At the end of qualifying, the Cranbrook Team looked strong with the Firsts sitting atop the leader board undefeated. The Seconds fought hard to win two critical final races and qualify for the finals in 7th place. The Thirds then went on a 4-race-win-streak, to elevate themselves into 12th place – missing the finals by a single point after 10 races. The Firsts came into the finals ready to fight hard and ended up against a strong Scots Firsts in the best of a 3 race semi-final, a match up that clearly saw the best two teams meet early. Unfortunately, Scots came off the start line in a strong position for two races in a row and were able to block the Cranbrook First’s assault to hold them off and win 2 – 0. This saw Cranbrook Firsts finish 3rd while Scots Firsts went on to dominate the final. The boys were disappointed to not have progressed through after such a strong showing in the qualifiers but are rightly proud of their second podium in a row at the regatta. They now begin preparing for the National Championships in July and their next battle with the other schools.
