From 29 June to 6 July, Cranbrook Year 8 student, Walter and three other young Optimist sailors from New South Wales and Victoria showcased their skills at the 2024 Optimist European Championships in Carrara, Italy. The event featured 157 male and 120 female athletes from 44 countries, making for a highly competitive atmosphere. After a rigorous week of training, the Australian team braved five days of challenging conditions, pushing their limits against some of the best sailors in the world.
After qualifying in 22nd place, Walter secured a commendable 40th place finish in his fleet. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed immense satisfaction and enthusiasm for the event. Looking ahead, he hopes to leverage this experience to qualify for the Optimist World Championships in Slovenia next year, aiming to further his sailing career on the global stage.
