Year 11

In Year 11, where only the study of English is mandatory, the School offers a wide selection of subjects. In the senior years, students play an increasingly independent role in the choice of their subjects, but advice and support is provided by the student's Tutor, Housemaster and the Careers Counsellor.

Students must study 12 units for both the Preliminary (Year 11) and the Higher School Certificate courses at Cranbrook School:

Extension 1 course – 3rd unit4 additional periods per cycle added to the core 8 periods
Extension 2 course – 4th unit4 additional periods per cycle added to the core 8 periods and the extension 4 periods

Students must choose an English course from one of the following:

  • English Standard
  • English Advanced
  • English as a Second Language.

Students who choose Advanced English may also take the additional English Extension 1 course in Years 11 and 12, and opt for the additional English Extension 2 course for the Higher School Certificate year.

All other subjects offered are 2 unit subjects, unless indicated otherwise:

  • Business Studies
  • Chemistry
  • Design and Technology
  • Drama
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Economics
  • French
  • Geography
  • History - Ancient and/or Modern
  • Information Processes and Technology
  • Japanese
  • Latin
  • Legal Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Photography - 1 unit
  • Physics
  • Sport, Recreation and Lifestyle - 1 or 2 units
  • Studies of Religion - 1 or 2 units
  • VET courses
  • Visual Arts

NB: Subject offerings may vary from year to year.

In Year 11, all students, except those timetabled elsewhere, are involved in 4 periods of:

  • Religious Studies
  • Physical Education
  • Careers
