Cranbrook has a strong history of successful debating and currently has a squad of approximately 60 students from Years 7 - 12. The students are trained each week by Old Boys.

Teams participate in two debating competitions each year; the ISDA Competition and the CAS Competition. Debaters compete on Friday evenings in Terms 1, 2 and 3. The debates are held either at Cranbrook or at a host school. Friendly debates against Newington College, Sydney Grammar School and Sydney Boys' High are held annually. These are schools that do not usually participate in the formal competitions.

The School also runs an inter-House debating competition in Term 3 which gives all students the opportunity to participate in the activity in a less formal and stressful forum. This competition is usually adjudicated by staff members as well as members of the Senior Debating Squad.
