School Council
Cranbrook School is founded on the principles of the Anglican Church. The Archbishop of Sydney is Visitor of the School and nominates two members of the Council. The Council must have no fewer than eleven and no more than fifteen members. The Headmaster attends all Council meetings.

President - The Hon Mr Justice Ken Handley AO BA LLB LLD(Hon Causa)
Justice Handley was a Judge of the New South Wales Court of Appeal from 1990 until his retirement in 2007. He continues to serve in an acting capacity. He is an Old Cranbrookian and the father of four Old Cranbrookians. He has been a member of the School Council since 1974 and President since 1999. He was Old Cranbrookian of the Year for 1998 and Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney from 1980 to 2003. He has been President of St John Ambulance Australia (NSW) since 2006.

Vice-President - Mr Michael Maxwell BEc LLB
Mr Maxwell is an Old Cranbrookian who left the School in 1977. With both legal and investment banking experience he now specialises in structured finance transactions. He is Chairman of the not-for-profit organisation, Sculpture by the Sea, and Chairman of an Australian-based research and development company, Flat Technology. His son completed his education at Cranbrook in 2007. Michael was elected to the Council in 1992. He served as Treasurer from 1993 to 1999, and remains a member of the Finance Committee.

Hon Treasurer - Mr Geoff Kimpton BA(Monash) MBA(Melbourne) FFin
Mr Kimpton’s commercial career was with Westpac where he held several executive positions. He spent a number of years on the Board of Baycorp Advantage and was Chairman of its Audit and Risk Committee. He has one son at Cranbrook and another who completed his schooling in 2006. He acted as Convenor of Cranbrook Carnivale in 2003. He was appointed the School’s Treasurer in November 2008.

Mr Tim Burroughs MA(Cantab) BPsych(Hons)(Macq) FCA
Mr Burroughs is a qualified chartered accountant and has worked in the investment banking industry as a corporate financial advisor for over 25 years. He is Co-Chairman of Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs JB Were. He is also undertaking post-graduate studies in Psychology. He is Chairman of the Cranbrook Foundation and has two sons who are both Old Cranbrookians.

Mrs Sarita England BA(Comms)(UTS)
Mrs England works as a consultant in not-for-profit fundraising. After serving a cadetship with News Ltd she worked overseas before moving into copywriting and fundraising. She is also involved in a family business, and is a member of Sydney Synod and the South Sydney Regional Council of the Diocese. She has one adult daughter, one daughter studying at university and a son who left Cranbrook last year. She was appointed to the Council in 2001.

Mr Andrew Keene BA
Mr Keene joined the Council in 1999. He was formerly a partner in Ernst & Young Management Consulting and is now a partner in the LiTMUS Group, a consultancy specialising in performance management and technology. Mr Keene has two sons who are Old Cranbrookians.

Ms Susie Manfred BComm MPE(UNSW) GradCert(AppFin&Inv)(SIA)
Ms Manfred joined the Council this year. She is currently a director of a private company and is a founding member of The Marmalade Foundation which established, funded and operates Lou’s Place, a centre for women and children in need. She sits on its Management Advisory Board of which she is a past Chairman. Ms Manfred was a Group Account Director with M & C Saatchi. She has worked for multinational agencies locally and overseas in account management and strategic planning. Her two sons are currently enrolled in the Senior School. They are the fourth generation in the McPherson family to be directly involved with Cranbrook School; their father and grandfather were also students, and their great grandfather was on the School Council. Ms Manfred is President of Cranbrook’s Music and Drama Association and President of the Cranbrook School Parents’ Association.

Mr Roger Massy-Greene BSc BE(Hons)(Syd) MBA(Harvard)
Mr Massy-Greene is Chairman of Eureka Capital Partners, a company which focuses on financing and development in the minerals and energy sectors. He co-founded Excel Coal Limited in 2002 and was its Chairman until 2006. He founded and served as the Managing Director of Resource Finance Corporation Ltd from 1984 to 2002. Previously, he worked for Bank of America in project and corporate finance, and as an underground mining engineer for Rio Tinto Limited. Mr Massy-Greene currently serves on the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal Committee and is Chairman of the Eureka Benevolent Foundation.
Mr Massy-Greene was appointed to the School Council in 2004. His son left Cranbrook in 2005.

Dr Helen Nugent AO BA(Hons) PhD(Qld) MBA(Dist)(Harvard)
Dr Nugent is a Director of Macquarie Bank, Origin Energy and Freehills, as well as being Chairman of Funds SA, and Swiss Re Life & Health (Australia). She has been appointed Chancellor Elect at Bond University this year. She was previously Director of Strategy at Westpac Banking Corporation, a partner with McKinsey & Company, and Professor in Management and Director of the MBA Program at the Australian Graduate School of Management, University of New South Wales. She has been actively involved in the Arts, including chairing the Nugent Inquiry and being Deputy Chairman of the Australia Council. She was a member of the 2008 four panel Bradley Review on Higher Education. She has been a member of the School Council since 1993 and has a son in the Senior School.

Mr Philip W Stern BS(MechEng)(Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) MBA(Dist)(Harvard)
Mr Stern is a Director of Port Jackson Partners Limited, a management consulting firm specialising in strategic and organisational advice. His son is enrolled in the Senior School, having attended Cranbrook since pre-school. Mr Stern joined the Council in 1998 and served as Treasurer from 2000 until the end of 2008. His other community involvements include the Harvard Club of Australia, of which he is a past President.
Dr Michael Spence BA(Hons) LLB(Hons)(USyd) Dphil PG DipTheol(Oxford)
Dr Spence is the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Sydney University. He was Head of the Social Sciences Division at the University of Oxford where he oversaw significant growth of research activity and funding in the Social Sciences. He is internationally regarded as a leader in the field of intellectual property theory. He was consultant to the London law firm, Olswang and served as a WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center panelist. He has lectured ion intellectual property related topics around the world and has held a number of visiting appointments in Boston, Munich and Siena. He has twice been a Parsons Fellow at the Law School of the University of Sydney and he has also worked for the Australian Copyright Council. In addition, he is an ordained Anglican priest. He was appointed as a member of the School Council in February 2009 and has two sons in the Senior School.

Reverend Clive Watkins BSc (Eng) BTh DipMin
Reverend Watkins is the Anglican Minister at St George’s Church, Paddington. Prior to this, he was the Senior Assistant Minister in the Hunters Hill parish. His daughter and son completed their secondary schooling at Meriden and Trinity Grammar respectively. Reverend Watkins trained for the ministry in Melbourne after working at the steelworks in Newcastle in engineering and computing. Following his ordination he served in parishes in Newcastle, the Central Coast and the Upper Hunter, where he also served for a time as chaplain to Scone Grammar School.

Reverend David James West BTh DipMin
Rev West is the Anglican Minister at All Saints’ Woollahra, having relocated from the inner west. His three children were educated at Meriden and Trinity Grammar where he served on the School Council for a period of five years. Having trained for the Ministry later in life, most of his work experience is in the retail sector. Following ordination he served for ten years in the parish of Five Dock/Haberfield. He moved to Woollahra early in 2004.

Mr James (Evan) Williams BCom LLB LMusA FCIS
Mr Williams is a senior executive working in the financial services sector. He heads up a team responsible for the provision of corporate services in the areas of legal, corporate secretarial, human resources, community and government relations, and communications. He is also a solicitor and chartered secretary with thirty years experience in commercial law and the management of public companies. Mr Williams is President of the Old Cranbrookians Association, is a past President of the Cranbrook School Parents' Association and serves on Council’s Finance Sub-committee. He is actively involved on the Boards of several not-for-profit organisations.
