History of the Archives

In the early 1980s Cranbrook School Archives was established by a former master at the School, Mr Ken Felton, a man much loved and respected by the School community.

It soon became evident to him that the collection of records he was accumulating required formal organisation. His work formed the basis upon which the Archives was founded. On his retirement in 1987 a professional Archivist was appointed to operate the Archives according to archival principles and standards.

The Cranbrook School Archives acts as the corporate memory of Cranbrook School and is an integral part of the School fabric. The mission of the Archives is to ensure the preservation in perpetuity of official and unofficial records, and artefacts appraised to be of permanent value to the continuing history, heritage and management of Cranbrook School. These records and artefacts are made available for use on behalf of past, present and future generations, and are used as part of current decision-making processes. The Archives comprise the in-House archives, (eg the official records of the School of permanent value), and the Heritage Collection, which is a collection of movable objects of cultural heritage significance to the School. Examples of records and objects held in the Archives include photographs, items of uniform, school registers, the school magazine The Cranbrookian, other School publications, prize lists, architectural plans and oral history recordings. Cranbrook School, through the Archives, is committed to making its history, heritage and culture accessible to members of the School community and the public.

Can you help?

There are many gaps in the School Archives and we are dependent on Old Cranbrookians and their families for assistance by donating their photographs, memorabilia, School reports, items of uniform and any other material of relevance and of permanent value to Cranbrook.

The Archives is located adjacent to the Foundation building, the Uniform Shop and the Alumni Office, and is operated by the School Archivist on a full-time basis during term.
