Boarding at Cranbrook provides boys with a strong, supportive home in an educational environment. It provides a rich environment of learning and activity as it helps prepare young men for their future lives. Many former students have spoken highly of the important study skills and discipline they learned during their years of boarding and how well the experience equipped them for post-secondary and vocational success.
Cranbrook believes that the boarding experience is an integral part of School life. The School is committed to caring for boarders with particular regard to their:
- physical needs
- security and safety
- level of belonging
- self-esteem
- self-realisation.
Cranbrook School has approximately 100 boarders who are housed and cared for in Street House and Rawson House. Both Houses have been renovated to provide comfortable living and study quarters. Each House is led by a Housemaster, his wife and several resident Tutors. A registered nurse lives on-site and looks after the health needs of the boys.
Each House is divided into small tutor groups who meet together most mornings to discuss academic, social and personal issues. These meetings are overseen by a House Tutor who promotes the development of peer support and the family ethos of the boarding Houses.
Each evening a House tutor moves around all the boys during their prep/study time to offer study assistance and to keep in personal touch. An open door policy prevails with the Housemasters so that boys are comfortable to call on them whenever the need arises.
The weekends are busy times. Saturday is generally taken up with interschool sport. Cranbrook provides a range of activities for boarders, which are planned by the Housemasters and Tutors. A student not going out on leave for the weekend with parents or other hosts will be able to make choices that include:
- walks and ferry rides
- visits to the theatre for plays, opera and film
- visits to the zoo, movies, theme parks and the beach
- rugby league /union and cricket matches
- socials with other schools
- ski trip
- swimming, surfing, roller blading, ice skating, ten pin bowling, golf, putt putt and indoor rock climbing
- historical tours, and visits to art galleries and museums
- attendance at School productions and concerts (attendance to some may be compulsory and part of the overall academic program of the School)
- motor and boat shows.
Boarders have access to the School’s facilities including the gymnasium, the weights room and the swimming pool, when supervisory staff is on duty. Boys can use these facilities outside normal hours if the Master on Duty or Tutor supervises. Boarders also have access to some music rooms for practice during their free time at night.
Televisions, Foxtel, DVD players, a pool table, table tennis, chess sets and some board games are available in each House for use in free time.
